“Alabama Independent Insurance Agents Endorse Quinton Hanson for AlabamaState House”

The Alabama Independent Insurance Agents Association (AIIA) has endorsed Quinton Hanson for Alabama House District 1. AIIA has more than 500 members statewide and is the state’s largest and oldest association dedicated to property and casualty insurance.

“We are proud to announce our support for Quinton Hanson,” said VictorMcCarley, spokesperson for AIIA. “We are thrilled to have someone who understands the issues that we face on a daily basis and is for a pro- business environment. Quinton is a small businessman who will fight to cut the wasteful spending in Montgomery and eliminate the government red tape that hurts businesses. We need his conservative leadership more than ever to create jobs and get our economy moving.” concluded McCarley.

Oil-field math explained

Oil-field math
A 15 mpg clunker that travels 12,000 miles a year uses 800 gallons of gas a
year.

A 25 mpg vehicle that travels 12,000 miles a year uses 480 gallons a year.
So, the average Cash for Clunkers transaction will reduce US gasoline
consumption by 320 gallons per year.

They claim 700,000 clunkers were turned-in, so that’s 224 million gallons
saved per year.

That equates to a bit over 5 million barrels of oil.

5 million barrels is about 5 hours worth of US consumption.

More importantly, 5 million barrels of oil at $70 per barrel costs about
$350 million dollars

So, the government paid $3 billion of our tax dollars to save $350 million.

We spent $8.57 for every dollar we saved.

I’m pretty sure they will do a great job with our health care, though.

A sobering response to an arrogant complaint

Luke AFB is west of Phoenix and is rapidly being surrounded by civilization that complains about the noise from the base and its planes, forgetting that it was there long before they were. A certain lieutenant colonel at Luke AFB deserves a big pat on the back. Apparently, an individual who lives somewhere near Luke AFB wrote the local paper complaining about a group of F-16s that disturbed his/her day at the mall.

When that individual read the response from a Luke AFB officer, it must Have stung quite a bit.

The complaint:
‘Question of the day for Luke Air Force Base:

Whom do we thank for the morning air show? Last Wednesday, at precisely 9:11 A.M, a tight formation of four F-16 jets made a low pass over Arrowhead Mall, continuing west over Bell Road at approximately 500 feet. Imagine our good fortune! Do the Tom Cruise-wannabes feel we need this wake-up call, or were they trying to impress the cashiers at Mervyns early bird special?

Regarding ‘A wake-up call from Luke’s jets’ On June 15, at precisely 9:12 a.m . , a perfectly timed four- ship fly by of F-1 6s from the 63rd Fighter Squadron at Luke Air Force Base flew over the grave of Capt. Jeremy Fresques. Capt Fresques was an Air Force officer who was previously stationed at Luke Air Force Base and was killed in Iraq on May 30, Memorial Day.

At 9 a.. m. on June 15, his family and friends gathered at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City to mourn the loss of a husband, son and friend. Based on the letter writer’s recount of the fly by, and because of the jet noise, I’m sure you didn’t hear the 21-gun salute, the playing of taps, or my words to the widow and parents of Capt. Fresques as I gave them their son’s flag on behalf of the President of the United States and all those veterans and servicemen and women who understand the sacrifices they have endured..

A four-ship fly by is a display of respect the Air Force gives to those who give their lives in defense of freedom. We are professional aviators and take our jobs seriously, and on June 15 what the letter writer witnessed was four officers lining up to pay their ultimate respects.

The letter writer asks, ‘Who m do we thank for the morning air show? The 56th Fighter Wing will make the call for you, and forward your thanks to the widow and parents of Capt Fresques, and thank them for you, for it was in their honor that my pilots flew the most honorable formation of their lives.

Only 2 defining forces have ever offered to die for you….Jesus Christ and the American Soldier.
One died for your soul, the other for your freedom.

PAC to PAC transfers what are they

Are ethcis really all that important

In recent years there have been many articles written on ethics reform in the state of Alabama. Is it really needed? It seems that everyone that you talk to who is familiar with how things work in the Alabama State Legislature thinks that the reforms are needed. This opinion in the Birmingham News certianly makes a valid argument for these reforms.

Busy Week in the Shoals

It seems as if I have gone from one thing to another for the past few months as far as community activity is concerned. The Shoals Area has the good fortune of having several committed individuals at work for the community. Earlier today the Chamber of Commerce had a board meeting where the issues of the Chamber were discussed. For Lunch The Chamber hosted Congressman Parker Griffith. Both of these were very informative meetings.

I had never had the chance to sit and discuss things with Congressman Griffith but I found him to be very personable and sincere.

I have been really encouraged by the comments that I have received since making the announcement about running for the Alabama House of representatives. Once more folks that I really did not expect to hear anything from, and the great thing is that they are from all over the district. Doors that I did not expect to be open have been open.

QUINTON HANSON LAUNCHING BID FOR DISTRICT 1 HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES

Florence, Ala. (June 6, 2009) – Lauderdale County’s Quinton Hanson said Saturday he is launching a bid to become Alabama’s next District 1 House of Representatives. Hanson, 53 is the first official announcement made to run in the Republican primary field, and the list of Republican candidates is expected to be short, while the Democratic primary appears to have a long list forming. Tammy Irons currently seated has decided to seek the State Senate seat of long time Senator Bobby Denton who just recently announced his retirement.

Hanson, a well respected businessman, devoted husband, and father of two grown sons, said he wants “a citizen legislator that is in touch with the public and their wishes.”

“I would love to see integrity returned to the legislative process, without having to worry about why certain decisions were made or certain pieces of legislation were passed,” Hanson said. “I’m running for the House of Representatives because I am not convinced that this can happen unless we return to the citizen legislator concept rather than depend on “career politicians” to be involved with the legislature.”

Hanson’s roots go back 6 generations in the Shoals. He was educated in the local public schools. He married Susan Pettus in 1975. In 1991 he founded Associated Insurors, Inc. and through this business he has been active member in many associations over the years like the Shoals HomeBuilders, Shoals Board of Realtors, Independent Insurance Agents of Alabama, and Associated General Contractors. Hanson has also been a member of the Shoals Chamber of Commerce where he has served 4 years on the Board of Directors and 6 as Chairman of the Legislative Committee; in the 80′s he helped organize the Underwood Petersville Fire Department. Hanson has been a member of Woodmont Baptist Church in Florence since 1977 and has served in various leadership rolls with Woodmont including deacon.

Hanson ran for State Senate and lost in 2002 against long-serving incumbent Bobby Denton, but knew then as he knows now that serving his community is a life-long goal. Another life goal of Hanson’s was achieved shortly after his 2002 defeat. He spent his free time getting his pilot’s licenses and eventually attained his instrument rating. He soon joined Angel Flight, a volunteer non-profit organization dedicated to arranging and supplying long-distance transportation at times of personal and community crisis, and in 2005/2006 flew both medical supplies and volunteers into areas hit by Katrina. In 2006 he received the Outstanding Pilot Award for his efforts with Angel Flight.

Hanson hasn’t revealed any specifics about his campaign but said it will focus on legislative reform, education, tax reform and limiting state spending. He has yet to hire a campaign consultant/manager but says he “feels competitive” with his donor base and supporters this time around.

Meeting with political supporters

In recent days I have talked with several folks encouraging me to consider running for the legislature. The interesting part is that it is not folks who I would typically expect that type of encouragement from. These are folks who have heard about my interest in the race from the recent news articles and are seeking me out.

The main thing that I hope to keep perspective on if I do run for office is, am I doing it for the right reasons? The right reason being to look after the needs of the citizens of the State of Alabama. It seems that so many of the reasons behind the decisions being made in the legislature today make no sinse from “the people’s” point of view.

It bothers me that the legislators who were recently convicted did not think what they were doing was wrong. Accepting money for work that they did not do, at the expense of the Alabama Public. Surely they gave pause just a little bit to think that this is wrong.

Time spent with one of my favorite people

Today I had the pleasure of spending the day with my Bride of 33 years. She had asked earlier in the day if I could fly her to Birmingham to look for a dress. If became apparent as we left, that the trip was not so much for her as it was for me. It was the first time I had been in the airplane since a good friend of mine was killed in an aircraft accident last week.

He was a great guy that everytime you came into the room it was obvious that the room was not large enough to contain his personality. He was always upbeat and it quite honestly was just fun being around him. He’s only been gone a week but I already miss him. There are a few folks who loved flying more than me and he was one of those few.

My sweet wife was anxious to help me and by asking me to fly her to Birmingham, which could easily have been driven easier than flying on a trip of short distance such as that. I love flying and I love the volunteer work that I do with Angel Flight. It is important to me, and she understands just how much I love it and she is anxious to see me get “back in the air”. I am truly a blessed man and love her very much.
